Hey all, nice idea to have a forum dedicated to Zwift.
I was wondering:
Why is there a W/kg target for group rides? I mean, drafting will change your output and guys at the front will be at a higher ratio than people in the pack. And what I just said only applies to persons of the same weight.
Also, on the flat: Same W/kg and different weights means different speeds, not even counting the drafting effect.
I just don't see how you can have a W/kg target for a ride and at the same time hope that the pack won't break apart.
Why don't organizers use speed targets, like you have outdoor, and different packs with different targets? Say A-pack is 35km/h +, B-pack is 30 km/h, etc.

w/kg target will usually refer to the output of the lead and, if the groups could maintain decent discipline, the lead rider would always be at the front and it gives an indication to others of whether the ride is likely to be suitable for them - once they are in the ride then they will get a feel of what effect the group has on their output and they can move up/down categories as required. So I'd treat the w/kg as the first entry value to the ride, after that you'll have a better idea of what a group ride will be - remembering that once off the back the output required to rejoin changes massively and, in the case of most rides, the group won't slow. WSR (World Social Ride) is different in that it has a Sweep as well and therefore ends up a no-drop ride, but riders can still see 3.5w/kg for over 2mins to catch on the flat if they get dropped from the 2w/kg group by not paying attention (from experience )

I can see how w/kg won't mean much for most of Watopia & Richmond but a big unit like me can lose chunks of time on the climbs. I did an experiment and halved my Zwift weight in Richmond and I came in 3mins quicker than I'd ever done. Despite some snarky comments on FB, it does make a difference.
Ideally, I'd like to see a wattage range for the flat sections and a w/kg for the climbs

I'm in the Clydesdale category again at the moment (put on 15kg in the last 6mths of inactivity before zwift) and the one advantage is we get pretty close to the 80km/h achievement on the downhills

I don't find we have an advantage descending as much as in real life: I've hit 107kph descending without turning a single pedal stroke but I'll prob need to put in 2000W to do that on Zwift. W/kg is defo a critical element uphill but negligible on flat road, unless they've also factored in the narrower aero profile of a thinner avatar Us Clydesdales seem to lose uphill and not gain downhill, so raw power is all we have!
